 # Ratio & Proportion (3)

1. A father said to his son, “I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth”. If the father’s age is 38 years now, what was the son’s age five years back?
1. 20 years
2. 18 years
3. 14 years
4. 22 years

Explanation :-

Let the son’s present age be x years.
Therefore, (38 – x) = x
2x = 38      =>   x = 19
Son’s age five years ago = 19 – 5 = 14 years

2. Ayisha’s age is 1/6th of her father’s age. Ayisha ‘s father’s age will be twice the age of Shankar’s age after 10 years. If Shankar’s eight birthdays was celebrated two years before, then what is Ayisha ‘s present age.
1. 10 years
2. 12 years
3. 8 years
4. 5 years

Explanation :-

Shankar’s present age = 8 + 2 = 10
Ayisha’s father’s age after 10 years = 2(10 + 10) = 40
Ayisha’s father’s present age  = 40 -10 = 30
Ayisha’s present age = 30 / 6 = 5 years

3. The sum of the present ages of a son and his father is 60 years. Six years ago, father’s age was five times the age of the son. After 6 years, what will be son’s age?
1. 23 years
2. 22 years
3. 21 years
4. 20 years

Explanation :-

Lets assume the present age of son = x  years
Therefore , Present age of father = (60 – x)
(60 – x) – 6 = 5(x – 6)
54 – x = 5x – 30
x = 14
After 6 years , Son’s age = 14 + 6 = 20

4. Kiran is younger than Bineesh by 7 years and their ages are in the respective ratio of 7 : 9, how old is Kiran?
1. 25
2. 24.5
3. 24
4. 23.5

Explanation :-

Kiran’s Age : Bineesh’s age = 7 : 9
Let Kiran’s Age = 7x  &  Bineesh’s age = 9x
9x – 7x = 7
x = 3.5
Kiran’s age = 7x = 7 * 3.5 = 24.5 years

5. Six years ago, the ratio of the ages of Vimal and Saroj was 6 : 5. Four years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 11 : 10. What is Saroj’s age at present?
1. 18
2. 17
3. 16
4. 15
