1. Tenet – a principle or belief, especially one of the main principles of a religion or philosophy.

Synonyms: assumption, credo, creed, doctrine, dogma, precept, persuation

Antonyms: disbelief, doubt, reality, skepticism

Usage: Many people believe the tenet that parents should be responsible for the behaviors of their children.

 

2. Peril – expose to danger; threaten.

Synonyms: insecurity, jeopardy, menace, vulnerability, endangerment

Antonyms: certainty, protection, safety

Usage: Everyone knows drinking poison is an act that will put your life in peril.

 

3. Pugnacious – eager or quick to argue, quarrel, or fight.

Synonyms: antagonistic, argumentative, bellicose, brawling, cantankerous

Antonyms: easy-going, kind,

Usage: The pugnacious little boy constantly talks back to his mother.

 

4. Knack – an acquired or natural skill at doing something.

Synonyms: dexterity, ingenuity, propensity, savvy, adroitness

Antonyms: disinclination, inability, incapacity, ineptness

Usage: Cooking from scratch with no recipe was a knack for her.

 

5. Poach – to trespass, especially on another’s game preserve, in order to steal animals or to hunt.

Synonyms: smuggle, appropriate, encroach, filch, intrude, pilfer

Antonyms: give, receive

Usage: Poaching is not allowed in national parks.

 

6. Accolade – an award or privilege granted as a special honour or as an acknowledgement of merit.

Synonyms: distinction, kudos, approval, award, badge

Antonyms: criticism

Usage: During the monthly meeting, the company president will present an accolade to the employee of the month.

 

7. Lunacy – extreme foolishness or an instance of it

Synonyms: absurdity, folly, insanity, mania, aberration, dementia

Antonyms: intelligence, judgment, sense, seriousness

Usage: When she started talking about the ghost living in her home, many people thought she suffered from lunacy.

 

8. Stern – firm, strict, or uncompromising

Synonyms: austere, harsh, steely, ascetic, astringent

Antonyms: flexible, bland, lenient

Usage: Stern measures to restrict vehicle growth

 

9. Condone – accept (behaviour that is considered morally wrong or offensive).

Synonyms: disregard, allow, overlook, remit

Antonyms: respect, refuse, regard

Usage: The college cannot condone any behaviour that involves illicit drugs

 

10. Labyrinth – a complex structure or path

Synonyms: tangle, coil, complication, convolution, entanglement, intricacy

Antonyms: ease, simplicity, line

Usage: The scientist was curious to learn which of the mice would reach the exit of the labyrinth first.
