Question 1 of 50
1. Question
Category: Banking & Current AffairsChinese scientists have developed ____, a new device of 3D hollow-cone structure that can greatly increase the solar-thermal conversion efficiency?
Correct
Chinese scientists have developed ‘Artificial Transpiration’, a new device of 3D hollow-cone structure that can greatly increase the solar-thermal conversion efficiency. ‘Artificial Transpiration’ device was named by Zhu Jia and his team members in Nanjing University. An article published online by the National Science Review said that, ‘Artificial Transpiration’ was named so inspired by the transpiration process of trees. It comprises a special 1D water path within it. It can reduce the energy loss in conduction. The cone structure, based on a graphene film, can collect more sunlight throughout the day compared to a flat device. Hence, this device can improve solar-thermal conversion rate to 85 %. The scientists first applied this structure to solar waste-water treatment.

Category: Banking & Current AffairsName the device that can mimic the human brain, which was developed by Scientists at Northwestern University, USA, headed by an Indian?
Correct
Scientists at Northwestern University, USA, headed by an Indian, have developed “Memtransistor”, an electronic device that can mimic the human brain. Memtransistor combines the functions of a memristor and a transistor. The memtransistor has great potential in Artificial Intelligence (AI). It has been designed by Dr Vinod Kumar Sangwan (Indian), a post-doctoral researcher at Northwestern University and a team of scientists. Dr Vinod Kumar Sangwan said that, their work is presently at fundamental level. They are working on a realistic design for a full neural-network system. This device is said to have futuristic applications in health sector. He said that, the operating power can be reduced by reducing channel dimensions and grain size of the semiconductor molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The research findings were published in the Journal Nature.

Category: Banking & Current AffairsScientists at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, have discovered that the Indian ____ mosquito, when infected with the African strain of the Zika virus (ZIKV), can transmit the infection to suckling mice?
Correct
Scientists at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, have discovered that the Indian Aedes aegypti mosquito, when infected with the African strain of the Zika virus (ZIKV), can transmit the infection to suckling mice. A study was conducted by scientists from the NIV, the National Jalma Institute of leprosy and other Mycobacterial Diseases, to demonstrate how the Indian Aedes Aegypti mosquito is vulnerable to the Zika virus (ZIKV). The mosquitoes were experimentally infected with zika virus (African Strain MR-766) through the oral-feeding route. Infected mosquitoes were let to bite on infant and suckling mice. Few days after bitten by ZIKV contaminated mosquitoes the infant mice showed symptoms like trembling, isolated behaviour, signs related to the nervous system, lethargic movements etc. The mice were not able to move in the terminal stages of illness. The mosquitoes store the virus in their salivary glands, which makes it easy for transmission. The findings of this study were published in the journal Intervirology.

Category: Banking & Current AffairsWhich country announced a ban on all new offshore oil exploration permits as a part of Government’s plan to transition towards a carbon-neutral future?
Correct
On April 12, 2018, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban on all new offshore oil exploration permits as a part of her Government’s plan to transition towards a carbon-neutral future. No new permits for offshore oil exploration:
The ban on new offshore oil exploration permits has been applied with immediate effect. However, it will not affect existing permits and onshore drilling. It is to be noted that existing permits cover an area of 100000 sq km and some still have decades left on their exploration rights. Thus zero-carbon economy will essentially take effect in 30 or more year’s time. Jacinda Ardern, who took charge after winning elections in September 2017, stated that her Government is taking an important step to address climate change and create a clean, green and sustainable future for New Zealand. She has also assured that the decision will not lead to job losses in oil industry, which currently employs at least 11000 workers and contributes $1.8 billion per year to New Zealand economy.Incorrect

Correct
On April 12, 2018, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a notification aimed at tightening reporting norms for the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Under LRS, all resident Indian individuals, including minors, are allowed to freely remit abroad, up to USD 250000 per financial year for any permissible current or capital account transaction or a combination of both. LRS scheme was introduced on February 4, 2004. At that time the limit was just USD 25000. However it was revised in a phased manner in line with prevailing macro and micro economic conditions and now stands at USD 250000 per financial year. Individuals can avail foreign exchange for this purposes within the limit of USD 250000 only, from Authorised Dealers/Banks. However, till now, Authorised Dealers/Banks permitted LRS transactions solely on the declaration made by the remitter and thus monitoring of adherence to the limit was confined to obtaining such a declaration without independent verification. With a view to improve monitoring and also to ensure adherence to LRS limits, RBI has directed Authorised Dealers (ADs)/Banks to put in place a daily reporting system listing out all transactions undertaken by individuals under LRS. These reports will be accessible to all the other ADs.

On 11th April 2018, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) stated that the Indian economy would expand by 7.3 % in fiscal year (FY) 2018 and 7.6 % in the next fiscal year. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said that, this growth will be facilitated by various growth-oriented policy measures. The current account deficit would widen to 2.2 percent of GDP in FY2018 and 2.4 percent of GDP in FY2019. It also said that, current account deficit is expected to be financed by capital flows.
